Government Jobs are Shields against Foreclosures and Recession

According to AP it is observed that in some towns government jobs are acting as shields against foreclosures and recessions.

In North Carolina one out of every nine workers are not being able to get a job. But the unemployment is below the average of the state and comparatively less number of foreclosures is being posted. The people are still laughing in restaurants and shopping.

USA still sports certain islands of prosperity despite the severity of the recession. The common thread running through these places is at least 15% of the working people continue to be under the employment of the government according to Associated Press.

The University of North Carolina in Orange County being the nation’s oldest public one has always been during the best of times and worst of times a good job creator. In other places this role has been played by the military centres, the capital cities of the state and other government and educational entities.

The stress index of AP shows that the scores are determined by foreclosures, loss of jobs and bankruptcies. It showed that out of 3,000 counties, 300 are being protected from the economic crisis by the fact that a good number of people get their pay cheques from the federal, state or local government bodies.

The stress index gives each county a score starting from 1 and going up to full marks of 100. From the index marks it seems that the local residents in these havens are able to weather storms of cuts in government spending. It was noted that for every drop of 5 points in the percentage of government employees of a county, there is a corresponding 1 point increase in the economic stress score of that county.

In Riley County of Kansas the biggest employers are the military bodies as well as Kansas State University. Leon County in Florida is dependent on state government jobs. In Los Alamos the job provider is the national laboratory.

Orange County has also been included in the research. 25% of the jobs are funded by the government according to the data of Census Bureau. Its current stress index reads 6.63. In adjacent Alamance County out of 20 jobs 1 is funded by government. Here the stress index reads 12.92.

Taking this picture into consideration the new administration of Obama seems to have taken the right move in focusing on productive work that will simultaneously create government jobs.
