Foreclosures Indirectly Responsible For Spread of West Nile Virus

Foreclosures are being indirectly held responsible for the spread of West Nile virus. Two residents of Washington who traveled through Mid-Columbia during the last month has most probably contracted the disease said officials of Bento-Franklin Health District. Confirmation is being awaited. It could take many weeks because the blood tests will undergo review. But the very probability poses great danger for the region and elsewhere. Like foreclosures, mosquito borne diseases do not take time to jump from one area to another in deadly precision attacks. It respects no boundaries. Like foreclosures if not contained early the outcome will be dangerous.

One of the suspects has developed neurological symptoms like headache and confused thinking. It was a case of meningitis. The other person has been diagnosed as a victim of West Nile fever. The symptoms of both are common said Susan Shelton, a health environmental specialist. The identities of the two are not yet disclosed.

West Nile virus that has come riding on the back of foreclosures is a serious disease that causes swelling of the brain and or the spinal cord. It leads to fever, head and body aches as well as outbreak of rashes combined with exhaustion and fatigue. Sometimes it shows no symptoms. If symptoms do occur it happens within two to fifteen days after being exposed to the virus. Mosquitoes are the carriers transferring from birds, horses and humans. In Benton, Grant and Yakima counties most of the birds and horses have shown positive results. In Washington so far six birds and three persons have showed positive for West Nile. People are still not aware of the danger of being infected with this virus.

As a precautionary measure old tyres and containers need to be disposed off. Water gathers in the hollows and creates the ideal ground for mosquito breeding. It is the abandoned reo homes that are lying neglected and attracting mosquitoes in the stagnant pools. It is not just a question of a tyre here and a container there. As a precaution while outside the reo house it is advised that long sleeved shirts and long pants should be worn. Another method is the use of mosquito repellent sprays and fixing screens on the doors and windows of bank reo properties. Those who suspect infection should immediately contact the doctor.

The remedial task seems to be an impossible uphill task considering the number of abandoned foreclosed empty real estate owned properties.
