Foreclosure Status of House of Judicial Candidates in Doubt

Foreclosures status of house of judicial candidates Sandra T. Thompson and Kathleen J. Prendergast is in doubt. Court documents however seem to indicate that their personal financial difficulties are not as grave as they apparently appear.
Both are Democratic candidates. They said that fiscal problems should have no negative impact on their qualifications to act as judge in York County Common Pleas Court. The voting is scheduled for 3rd November.
In the early part of October Wells Fargo filed a foreclosure suit on a mortgage worth $262,000 against Thompson. The property in question is in Springettsbury Township. County documents show that Thompson was defaulting in taxes ($3,500).
The charge against Prendegast was that she has not paid income tax amounting to $24,000.
Neither of the Republican candidates (Harry Ness and Chuck Patterson) was in the clear regarding financial matters.
Wells Fargo alleges that Thompson defaulted on the loan from May this year. Thompson admitted her failure during the time she was campaigning but is now current. This has caused her to be surprised that foreclosure proceedings have been initiated against her. She also said that the bank had admitted that the filing of the foreclosure had been a mistake. Thompson said, “All I can say is that I am not in foreclosure. Somebody filed (the foreclosure complaint) when they didn’t have all of the information.”
She also claimed that all the county taxes had been cleared. She added, “I’m a small business person. I may pay late, but I pay.” Her 17 year old son asked a very leading question, “What does this have to do with you being judge?” Her reply was that it had nothing to do with it but it was just that people were focusing on negativity. She explained, “Just because I’m running for judge doesn’t mean I’m recession-proof. I’m not one to make a lot of excuses, but to be honest, there were a lot of issues that occurred all at once. There’s a cause and effect. If I’m not in my office (while campaigning), I’m not getting new clients. And there’s money going out. It takes money to support two children and a household. It takes money to run a campaign.” She feels that the threat of foreclosure should not malign her character or question her ability of being a proper judge.
Prendergast faces tax lines for 2003 and 2004. The federal lien on a property prevents it from being sold until the dues are cleared. Prendergast claimed that since she could not afford an accountant she had been filing the returns by herself and this most probably led to anomalies creeping up.
