Each day more news is pouring in of foreclosure pets being innocent victims of a brutal human world. Each story is a sad one. The sufferings of these dumb creatures cannot be measured by facts and figures.
The tale of, code officer Kathie White, in Hemet is one of many. Acting on the complaints of a neighbour he visited a reo house to come across a pathetic scene. A German shepherd dog was in chains covered in his own filth desperately eating bits of plaster to keep alive. Without timely intervention the dog would have died a slow horrendous death. There is no doubt that such cases fall within the ambit of animal cruelty.
More such incidents are being reported in the country and especially in the Inland region. The foreclosed humans are so wrapped up in their own misery that they have little time to give even a passing thought to these pets that are ostensibly a part of their family. White bemoaned, “It’s a case of out-or-sight, out-of-mind.” People are living from hour to hour and leave suddenly overnight without knowing where they are going. Under normal circumstances the pets are taken or some arrangement is made either with neighbours or animal shelters. But with the escalation of foreclosures many are just forgetful of their responsibilities to the four footed dumb creatures that share the planet and this society with us.
White recalls another experience in which she came across a dog with a bag of food locked inside a reo home. In another house there were newborn blind kittens left alone without a mother cat. Recently a 44-pound cat hit the headline news. It was found wandering around New Jersey with a collar round its neck. Later it was found that her mistress was a foreclosure victim.
A new website has been launched Webvet.com. Hope Schultz of this site said, “People are abandoning their animals, letting them loose, or worse, abandoning them inside the home.” The website gives information and tips for pet owners. She added that many people are behaving in this cruel manner because they do not want to draw attention to their foreclosed predicament by making noises about pet rehabilitation.
Usually the shelters in the Inland region do not keep data relating to the causes of pet abandonment like foreclosure. But the sheer increases in numbers speak for itself.

[...] The promising boom of Nevada’s real estate market has ended with the blast of foreclosures and vacant houses. Palm groves and low prices had tempted the Ackerley couple from Denver to come to Nevada sometime in 2004. Innumerable new houses beckoned to Alan and Katherine warmly. So the Ackerleys bought their retirement house but then the boom went bust. There was a deluge of short sales and foreclosed units in the market and the spreading virus did not spare them; in February the Ackerleys too lost the home of their dreams to foreclosure. [...]
