Detroit Reeling Under Foreclosure Et Al

The tottering economy of the city of Detroit, triggered by foreclosures, has become an object of public ridicule. The gnawing problems are scaling unemployment, glaring budget deficits, mismanagement of public fund crowned by a political crisis – are all leading to the city’s economic burial.

Detroit is reeling under foreclosure and has the highest rate in the nation’s REO homes scenario. A $47 million sludge recycling deal that had been approved by the City Council has come under the FBI scanner and was making top news. Again the City Council had disapproved a plan to sell a half of Detroit’s Detroit-Windsor commuter tunnel. It would have saved 1300 city workers from retrenchment. On the other hand, it had entered into a deal of $65 million, to balance its budget, and set up a tunnel authority to run the US-Canada border crossing. Authentic sources have revealed that FBI investigations involve four council members, employees and staffers of City Hall as well as men not within the government. A school district budget had formulated plans to lay off 518 teachers and 900 other staffers in summer, which had already discontinued with the services of 300 teachers at the beginning of the year. The student strength of the district was 106,000 and the Detroit board of education had approved the move. The student -teacher ratio looks grim.

Apart from foreclosures, Detroit has not been spared from its share of scandals. Council President Ken CockrelJr had to face the federal authorities that were probing into a contract with waste haulers Synagro Technologies. The chief of staff at Cockrel had handed in his resignation. The Federal Bureau’s investigations into the sludge deal only added to the already brimming woes. The expanding net of federal probe intends to tow in the rampant corruption in which government officials are getting increasingly involved. The FBI officials and the US attorney’s office refused to divulge any information on the case. Majority of the members of the City Council were bound for a tryst with the investigators, although most claim innocence.

Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick added the topping to Detroit’s misfortunes when his sex scandals surfaced. His career graph in the Democratic Party was rising as he went on to announce bold plans to renovate the riverfront and restructure old buildings. Although he denied having done any wrong, he was crumbling under such pressure. The sauce of foreclosures stepped in to this melee fishing in troubled waters.
